Why New Regulation Means Laser Projection Is an Inevitable Trend?
In December 2020, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) published a new safety standard IEC/EN/UL 62368-1 impacting many lamp-based projectors. The new standards classify lamp projectors by risk rating, and require that all cinema lamp projectors must now comply with the new safety regulations, globally. But what do these changes mean in practice for cinemas and projectors, and why is laser projection an inevitable trend?
1. New rules mean more regulations for lamp projectors
Like laser projectors, the majority of lamp projectors in cinema are Risk Group 3 (RG3), meaning that any new installation has to obey the new rules - with all the responsibilities that follow. The new rules are very specific and cover safety distances, hazard zones, and separation heights for lamp projectors. The standards mark cinemas' transition from traditional lamp projectors to laser projectors.
2. This ongoing renewal wave is an opportune time to adopt innovative laser technology
Historically, some exhibitors have preferred lamp projectors because they were subject to fewer regulations. But with IEC/EN/UL 62368-1, that's no longer true.
